ROAR Challenge: Communicate

On the first day back to school after winter break, we had a ROAR (Responsibility, Organization, Attitude, Respect) activity themed around communication.  The idea of this challenge was for one group of students to use verbal communication - no visual - to direct the second group of students into the pose as described by the picture they were given.  Students quickly learned how challenging it can be to give instructions with only verbal communication.  The biggest challenge they encountered was how to instruct each person to arrange themselves in relation to one another.

IAEA Conference 2017

One of my favorite times of year is the annual Illinois Art Education Association fall conference because I get to teach and learn with hundreds of art teachers from around the state.  This year I presented two workshops: Recyclables to Magnificent Papier Mache Sculptures and Involving Students in the Assessment Process.  Both sessions went great and had a positive response from the participants. 6th and 7th Grade Basketball Game

I am lucky enough to have wonderful students at Hester who love to go above and beyond the call of duty.  I co-sponsor yearbook club with Ms. Ryan and we have a wonderful committed group this year that is working on creating a FABULOUS yearbook.  As our official yearbook photographer, Sebastian Portillo spent two games before winter break capturing these action-packed shots of the Hester Boys Basketball Team and I couldn't wait for the yearbook release to share these photos.  Check it out!  Thanks Sebastian for your awesome hard work!

East Leyden Winter Art Show

I LOVE getting the chance to display student art at the East Leyden art show each year.  Not only does it give me a chance to display some of the AMAZING work of my students, but it also lets me check out the work of former students.  Hester students are so lucky to have such an amazing art department open to them in high school. AP Art: Students that have taken 3 or more art classes that work to put together an art portfolio to submit for college credit.  We had 4 Hester alum featured in the show: Alejandro Martinez, Alyssa Guillu, and Sara Snopek & Sebastian Portillo.  I am so proud of these students! Alyssa is a senior and is planning to major in biochemistry next year.  She said that amid her 6 AP art classes, she love to have art in the middle of her day as it gives her some peaceful reflective time.  Gerardo Villa was at the opening reception and took me around to see three of his artworks on display.  He is a junior this year and explained to me that he
