September Art Students of the Month!

We have been busy making lots of art this month, but I've been so involved I've forgotten to take  pictures!  I promise to keep you more updated this month with our work, but you can always check out student work on Artsonia. 

September Art Students of the Month: 
6th Grade: Robert Amoin
7th Grade: Trilce Cisneros
8th Grade: Ashley Castanon

Robert brings an enthusiasm that is unmatched by most!  He has thoughtful ideas and also works hard on his projects.  Robert also loves to talk Minecraft during work time and has lots of ideas to add to his artwork.  He enjoys reading the feedback on his art work and makes sure to have a thoughtful conversation to follow up. 



Trilce takes time to think through her ideas thoroughly.  The clock is her biggest challenge as she likes to make all of her details perfect and sometimes that slows her down.  Trilce is always willing to stop her work and help a friend in need.  She works to maintain the art studio and cleans up well.  



Ashley is a quiet artist.  She uses classroom resources to help her through each project and makes sure to make thoughtful choices in her artwork.  She likes to add a lot of detail in her work and doesn't take shortcuts, but instead makes her work how she wants it.  Ashley takes good care of our studio environment and makes sure to take good care of all our supplies.  





Congratulations artists!  Keep up the great work!

IAEA Conference 2017

One of my favorite times of year is the annual Illinois Art Education Association fall conference because I get to teach and learn with hundreds of art teachers from around the state.  This year I presented two workshops: Recyclables to Magnificent Papier Mache Sculptures and Involving Students in the Assessment Process.  Both sessions went great and had a positive response from the participants. East Leyden Winter Art Show

I LOVE getting the chance to display student art at the East Leyden art show each year.  Not only does it give me a chance to display some of the AMAZING work of my students, but it also lets me check out the work of former students.  Hester students are so lucky to have such an amazing art department open to them in high school. AP Art: Students that have taken 3 or more art classes that work to put together an art portfolio to submit for college credit.  We had 4 Hester alum featured in the show: Alejandro Martinez, Alyssa Guillu, and Sara Snopek & Sebastian Portillo.  I am so proud of these students! Alyssa is a senior and is planning to major in biochemistry next year.  She said that amid her 6 AP art classes, she love to have art in the middle of her day as it gives her some peaceful reflective time.  Gerardo Villa was at the opening reception and took me around to see three of his artworks on display.  He is a junior this year and explained to me that he

West Suburban Consortium of Academic Excellence Second Annual Art Expo 2016

The West Suburban Consortium of Academic Excellence (WSCAE) is a partnership of 15 school districts from Burr Ridge to Franklin Park and from Oak Brook to Oak Park.  The WSCAE sponsored  art expo was at the Cheney Mansion for the second year and it was a gorgeous event on a beautiful Saturday! Sponsors for the event include: Sax Art Materials who generously donated a variety of art supplies including markers, watercolors, and pencils.   Blick Art Materials donated markers, store coupons and 3 $100 gift cards.   Cheney Mansion donated the space for the weekend.  Joel Chung Center for the Arts donated pencils for writing fan mail and snacks for the teachers.  The three winners of the $100 gift cards were:  Simran Goel from Gower West,  Gower School District #62 Gwynnethe Andal from Passow, Franklin Park School District #84 Kathryn Curtin, Julian Middle School, Oak Park District #97 We were fortunate enough to have State Representative Camille Lilly visit the show a
